Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small child when her father, who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to perform tasks including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. Following only two school years she left for an acting career. There were many hurdles to overcome on her chosen career path. In New York she was hired to pose for photos for a magazine about crime however, no theatre job opportunities came up. After that, she was the hat checker in an evening club, before deciding to call it quits and returning to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a regular actor. The company paid her performing during the daytime working as an Usherette. Her studies in drama led her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
